As libraries review their collection development practices, more are discovering that their patrons prefer to get information in online formats. Transitioning to a more or mostly electronic depository is an option for libraries wanting to better meet the needs of these patrons, while saving space, money, and often staff time.

On Wednesday, November 10th, 2010 at 2:00PM EST, GPO Education and Outreach Librarians will host the November session of "Chat with GPO" via OPAL. This will be the third and final session of the series on transitioning to a more electronic depository. Questions from the first two sessions will be answered in a brief presentation, followed by time for additional questions.

Some of the questions the presentation will address are:

  • Can we select electronic now? When can electronic documents be added? Does it have to be during the item selection update cycle?
  • Are the new electronic documents all in the New Electronic Title list?
  • If we are moving to electronic documents, is a finding aid such as a LibGuide an acceptable substitute to library catalog record?
  • If we want to substitute electronic for tangible we must get the regional's permission ahead of time only if the materials have been held for less than 5 years?

Space is limited to the first 100 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. GPO recommends arriving at least 10 minutes early in order to reserve your spot and test your connection.
