The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has initiated steps to complete its migration from the OCLC PURL Resolver Software to the new PURLZ Resolver Software for its PURL implementation.

  • Start Date: Tuesday, September 21st at 4:30 p.m. EDT
  • End Date: Friday, September 24th (Estimated)

Starting Tuesday, September 21st at 4:30 p.m. EDT, GPO staff will cease updating PURLs using the OCLC PURL Resolver Software, which resides at purl.access.gpo.gov. During the migration period, GPO will not create or modify any PURLs. PURL users will not notice any disruption in service during the migration process.

On Friday, September 24th, GPO staff will begin utilizing the new PURLZ Resolver Software for all PURL additions and modifications. GPO will then test to ensure that all features and functionality are fully operational and then announce the public release of the new PURL system. All purl.access.gpo.gov traffic will then be redirected to the new system and the PURL migration will be complete.

Some significant improvements that will be experienced by libraries include:

  • Faster response times
  • Reduction of (ro)bot traffic that hinders PURL resolution
  • Improved PURL referral reporting

The new system will require traffic routing reconfigurations during the first few months after launch in order for optimal server routing to take place.

GPO will keep the library community informed throughout the migration process. Additional details on GPO's PURL relaunch can be found on the FDLP Desktop, PURL Enhancement and Stabilization.
