On December 29, 2010, Bob Tapella announced his resignation as Public Printer of the United States. Tapella became Public Printer in 2007 at the request of President George W. Bush.

"It has been a pleasure serving both the Obama and Bush Administrations during the last eight years at GPO," said Mr. Tapella. "I want to thank the hardworking men and women of GPO who have transformed a 150 year old agency. We are now a 21st century printing, digital media, secure credentialing and ISO 9001 premiere manufacturing organization."

Shortly after his resignation, President Obama announced the recess appointment of William J. Boarman as the nation's 26th Public Printer. Mr. Boarman has been involved with the printing industry and its labor relations and personnel management for more than 40 years, most recently as president of the Printing, Publishing and Media Workers sector and as senior vice president of the Communications Workers of America.

The Public Printer serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the GPO. The GPO is the Federal Government’s primary centralized resource for gathering, cataloging, producing, providing, authenticating, and preserving published U.S. Government information in all its forms. GPO is responsible for the production and distribution of information products and services for all three branches of the Federal Government.
