GPO Remembers the 23rd Public Printer Michael DiMario

M. DiMario Michael F. DiMario, who served as Public Printer of the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) from 1993–2002, passed away on July 5th in Annapolis, MD.  He was 87 years old. 

"On behalf of the entire GPO team, I send our heartfelt condolences and sympathies to Public Printer DiMario’s son Steve, extended family, colleagues, and friends," said GPO Director Hugh Nathanial Halpern.  "His leadership at the dawn of the digital age and GPO’s implementation of the GPO Electronic Information Access Enhancement Act in the 1990s had a profound impact on GPO operations and how the public accesses Government information."

DiMario served as the Nation’s 23rd Public Printer after being appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993.  GPO saw one of the Agency’s biggest changes in the distribution of Government information during DiMario’s leadership with the establishment of GPOAccess.  The website evolved into today’s GovInfo, which provides the public with free access to information on the three branches of the Federal Government.  The landmark Congressional legislation changed the way GPO produces Government information as well as how the American people receive Government information. GPO has garnered more than 12 billion retrievals of Government information since first making Government information available online in June 1994.

Prior to becoming one of GPO’s longest-serving leaders, DiMario held several management positions at the Agency including Superintendent of Documents, Assistant Public Printer for Procurement and Administrative Law Judge.  He began his GPO career in 1971.

Before coming to GPO, DiMario served as a counterintelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force. A resident of Maryland, he served for 13 years as a member of the Bowie City Council. DiMario is a graduate of Davis and Elkins College and holds a degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

A public visitation will be held on July 13, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lasting Tributes Funeral Home, 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD.
