GPO Expands Apprenticeship Program to Build Workforce

gpoapprenticeThe U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) is restarting and expanding its apprenticeship program to create the foundation for a new generation of GPO teammates. This program is a critical element of securing GPO’s future as many of the Agency’s current teammates are eligible to retire over the next five years. The graduates will help maintain a first-rate workforce that is in line with the Agency’s future growth and vision.

With the reinstatement of this program, the first class is comprised of proofreader apprentices. The Agency is expanding future classes to other trades and production areas this year. Qualifying candidates can apply on USAJOBS for the three-year program.

“For more than 100 years, GPO has developed the next generation of skilled craftspeople for our team and to carry out the work we do for the Federal Government,” said GPO Director Hugh Nathanial Halpern. “It’s our responsibility to ensure that we continue GPO’s 161 years of exceptional service. By passing on institutional knowledge and insight to new hires, we can be better prepared to meet our future business needs.”

GPO’s apprenticeship program dates back to the 1880s when apprentices spent four years learning their trade. In 2022, the Agency also restarted its Recent Graduate Program that develops new teammates for positions at GPO. For both its Apprenticeship and Recent Graduate Programs, GPO seeks to select teammates from diverse backgrounds and experiences, an important asset for the Agency’s future.
