GPO Sees Surge in Use of GovInfo to Access Government Information
1.7 billion retrievals in calendar year 2024
The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) in 2024 saw a surge in the number of retrievals on GovInfo, the one-stop site for authentic, published information for all three branches of the Federal Government. The site received 1.7 billion downloads of Government information, a 47 percent increase year over year. GPO has now garnered 12.7 billion retrievals of Government information since first making it available online in June 1994.
The most popular collections in 2024 were:
- US Courts Opinions: 375 million retrievals (70 percent increase compared to 2023)
- Congressional Bills: 357 million retrievals (210 percent increase compared to 2023
- Federal Register: 195 million retrievals (370 percent increase compared to 2023)
“We are thrilled to see our collections of Government information continuing to grow in popularity year over year,” said GPO Director Hugh Nathanial Halpern. “The large increase in retrievals this year proves GPO is delivering on its vision of an America Informed. We encourage all Americans to make use of this free resource.”
GPO’s digital transformation began in June 1994, when GPO first began making Government information available online with GPO Access. In January 2009, GPO unveiled the next generation system of online Government information with the Federal Digital System (FDsys). GPO launched GovInfo in February 2016 to replace FDsys. In 2019, GPO made history by becoming the first organization in the United States and second organization in the world to achieve the highest global standard of excellence possible for digital repositories. This certification reinforces GovInfo as a trustworthy source that performs digital preservation practices to ensure long-term preservation of and access to official Federal Government information.
