Introduction to U.S. Federal Documents at the Library of Congress - Plus Chronicling America
Ms. Striner will provide information about government publications at the Library, including collections policies, means of acquisition, and services available. She will describe some of her division's special government collections. Ms. Butterhof will discuss and demonstrate Chronicling America, a free national database of historic newspapers, sponsored jointly by the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Basic Copyright: What is Copyright and What’s Not
This session will be an interactive overview of the various types of works that can be registered with the copyright office. The audience will also see example of works not subject to copyright protection. Copyright Law Exceptions for Librarians
This presentation will explain the two primary copyright law exceptions relied upon by libraries: the section 108 exception and fair use. Section 108 is an exception tailored specifically to libraries and archives, and the presentation will outline its various provisions as well as discuss current efforts to amend the exception for the digital era. Fair use is an exception of general applicability that is also available to libraries. The presentation will provide a basic overview of how fair use is applied by the courts, and discuss two recent cases where libraries have used fair use as a defense against infringement claims.
