Subject Headings in the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP)
Description
Title: Subject Headings in the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP)
Speaker:
- Liselle Drake, Cataloging Librarian, GPO
- George Luoma, Cataloging Librarian, GPO
Description:
This webcast is intended to provide an overview of subject headings reflected in bibliographic records that describe U.S. government documents in the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP). Our objective is to cover sources of terms used for subject headings, the circumstances under which those terms are applied, and some new developments in controlled vocabularies.
Our emphasis is on interpretation for all users. This is neither a tutorial for catalogers on how to construct subject headings nor a course in lexicography theory. This information is intended for all catalog users who need to search and interpret subject headings in CGP records.
We anticipate that this overview of subject headings in CGP records will be used in its entirety by new Federal Depository Library staff as a training tool, and in part by experienced staff for updates on new vocabularies being used or considered for use by GPO
