May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. Check out these resources:
Do you want to promote your depository but feel a little stuck on how to start? Use the FDLP Coordinator Calendar LibGuide for ideas on social media posts and observances, to learn about a Federal agency each month, to find image galleries, and for suggested monthly FDLP tasks and tips.
Armed Forces Day is a holiday to thank the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. First conceived by President Harry S. Truman, the holiday was established in 1949. The creation of a single day celebration for all five branches of the United States military made sense due to its recent unification under the Department of Defense. Today, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of every May, this year falling on May 21, 2022. Check out these CGP and govinfo resources:
- Armed Forces Day Manual - 1963
- America’s military-our nation’s pride [picture] - 1992
- Directing the removal of United States Armed Forces from hostilities in the Republic of Yemen that have not been authorized by Congress.
- Certain Changes in the Defense Production Act of 1951
- Exempting Uniformed Members of the Armed Forces of the United States from Admissions Tax
Seven new govinfo webcasts on the U.S. Congressional Serial Set are now available. Recordings are brief—from one to four minutes in length.
