On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the act creating the National Park Service, a new Federal bureau in the Department of the Interior responsible for protecting the 35 national parks and monuments then managed by the department and those yet to be established. The National Park System of the United States now comprises more than 400 areas covering more than 85 million acres in 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.

On August 28, 1963, one-hundred years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, approximately 200,000 to 250,000 people arrived in Washington, D.C. and peacefully marched down Constitution and Independence Avenues to the Lincoln Memorial, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom drew attention to systemic racism and called for Federal legislation to guarantee the right to vote for all Americans.
