Braille Publications Treated as Serials

GPO Practice

  • Braille publications may be treated as serials-of-convenience. For more information, see Monographs Cataloged as Serials ("Serials-of-Convenience").
  • When cataloging a braille publication as a serial-of-convenience:
    • Transcribe the jacket number of an ‘issue’ in its item-level record
      • Use the “OPAC Note” field
Example:

CGP 982976

Item #983047-10 (2015 issue)

PCC Authentication

  • Authenticate records for braille expressions as PCC when they fulfill PCC requirements and conform to the following guidelines.

Authorized Access Point

  • Match the authorized access point (AAP) for a braille expression to an RDA-compatible AAP for the work, as found in the record for the original print version. Detailed instructions for formulating RDA-compatible AAPs are available to GPO staff in the internal training document, Authorized Access Points (AAPs) for Works & Expressions
    • .Special note for National Park Service (NPS) maps and brochures:
      • Match braille expressions of NPS maps and brochures to the original print versions by comparing the GPO jacket numbers for the publications.
        • Jacket numbers can be found in:
          • MARC 500 fields of bibliographic records for monographs (in the CGP or OCLC)
          • Item record OPAC notes for serials (in the CGP)
      • When no matching jacket number is found in an original print version record, but the braille publication fits the bibliographic description of an existing serial-of-convenience:
        • Treat the braille publication as a new ‘issue’ of the existing work.
          • Once a connection has been established between the serial-of-convenience records for original print and braille versions of NPS works, assess subsequent braille ‘issues’ according to standard serial cataloging policy.
      • When no jacket number match is found, and the braille publication received does not appear to be a new issue of an existing serial-of-convenience:
        • Catalog the braille publication as a new work, with a unique authorized access point.
  • In the bibliographic record for a braille expression, add the following at the end of a 130 or 240 field:
    • ǂh Tactile text

    • (Note: There is no period at the end of 240. A period must be added at the end of 130.)

Example:

Original print:

  • CGP 1113331
  • 245 00 Your guide to the 2020 Census : ǂb how to respond to the 2020 Census paper questionnaire.

Braille:

  • CGP 1113336
  • 130 0# Your guide to the 2020 Census. ǂh Tactile text.
  • 245 10 Your guide to the 2020 Census : ǂb how to respond to the 2020 Census paper questionnaire.
Example:

Original print:

  • CGP 1163570
  • 110 10 United States. ǂb National Park Service, ǂe cartographer.
  • 245 10 Waco Mammoth National Monument, Texas / ǂc National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.

Braille:

  • CGP 1163571
  • 110 10 United States. ǂb National Park Service, ǂe author.
  • 240 10 Waco Mammoth National Monument, Texas. ǂh Tactile text
  • 245 10 Waco Mammoth National Monument, Texas / ǂc National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
Example:

Original print:

  • CGP 1163573
  • 110 10 United States. ǂb National Park Service, ǂe cartographer.
  • 240 10 Acadia National Park, Maine (Map)
  • 245 10 Acadia National Park, Maine / ǂc National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.

Braille:

  • CGP 966885
  • 110 1# United States. ǂb National Park Service, ǂe author.
  • 240 10 Acadia National Park, Maine (Map). ǂh Tactile text
  • 245 10 Acadia National Park, Maine / ǂc National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.

Edition Statement

  • When a braille edition statement is present on the document, transcribe it in a 250 field.
Example:

250 ## Braille edition.

250 ## Unified English Braille edition.

250 ## Unified English Braille transcription edition.

  • For proper nouns, such as “Unified English Braille,” retain capitalization; as a generic term, “braille” is not capitalized.

GPO Practice

  • If the transcribed edition statement includes the words “braille” and “edition,” as in the examples above, no additional 250 is necessary. If there is no transcribed edition statement, or if the transcribed statement lacks the words “braille” and “edition,” include the following 250 field:

    250 ## [Braille edition].

Language Note

  • Use MARC 546 ǂb to record the form of tactile notation (RDA 7.13.4.4).
    • Capitalize proper nouns, such as “Unified English Braille,” but not the generic term “braille”

GPO Practice

  • Although 546 is not a transcribed field, prefer to accept wording as presented on the document.
Example:

546 ## ǂb Contracted (Grade II) braille transcription.

Example:

546 ## ǂ3 2020- ǂb Contracted (Grade 2) braille transcription.

546 ## ǂ3 2010-2019 ǂb Unified English Braille transcription.

Other Edition Entry

GPO Practice

  • Include reciprocal 775 fields to link a braille expression record and original print version record.

    Prefer:

           In braille expression record:

775 08 ǂi Braille edition of:

                  In original print version record:

775 08 ǂi Also issued in braille as:

  • Link serial records only to serial records; do not provide 775 fields to link a serial-of-convenience with any related monograph(s).
Example:

Braille:

CGP 1113336

775 08 ǂi Braille edition of: ǂt Your guide to the 2020 Census ǂw
(OCoLC)1152426367

Original print:

CGP 1113331

775 08    ǂi Also issued in braille as: ǂt Your guide to the 2020 Census. ǂb [Braille edition] ǂw (OCoLC)1176280733
